Field Identity

Florida Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex badius) is the real-world anchor for this Vault-Specimen. Florida Harvester Ant is a dark rust-red harvester ant with strongly polymorphic workers roughly 6–10 mm long; major workers have disproportionately enlarged heads, and the species has a two-segmented waist and a reduced psammophore beneath the head. Florida Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex badius) is associated with sandy open woodland, scrub, grass fields, and other sunny sites with well-drained soil. This is the only Pogonomyrmex east of the Mississippi and occurs through most of Florida where suitable open sandy habitat persists.
