Real-World InspirationAsbolus laevis is a dark desert tenebrionid beetle closely related to the better-known blue death-feigning beetle. Adults are roughly around two centimeters in length and have a smooth, black to charcoal dorsal surface rather than the heavily tuberculate, blue wax-coated appearance typical of Asbolus verrucosus. BugGuide notes the smooth surface and conspicuous long hairs associated with the tarsi among useful external characters. The species can perform thanatosis, becoming rigid and apparently dead when disturbed, which gives the group its common name. Death-feigning behavior is not unique to A. laevis and should not be used as the sole identification criterion. Current North American darkling-beetle catalogues recognize Asbolus laevis LeConte, 1851 from the desert Southwest and northwestern Mexico. Supplier locality and photographs should accompany trade labels when exact species identity matters.
