Real-World InspirationA large skimmer dragonfly. Mature males are predominantly blue, while females and immature males are browner with patterned thoraces; the face and eyes, leg coloration, wing-base markings, and overall size help separate it from similar blue skimmers. BugGuide places it in Libellulidae and records the authority as Fabricius, 1793. The species is primarily southeastern in the United States. Because mature male blue coloration occurs in several skimmers, photographs should include the thorax, face, legs, wing bases, and abdomen rather than relying on ‘large blue dragonfly’ alone.
