Real-World InspirationAnadenobolus monilicornis is a medium-sized spirobolidan millipede widely sold under the names bumblebee millipede and yellow-banded millipede. Adults are dark brown to nearly black with contrasting yellow to cream bands around the body rings and similarly warm-toned legs, producing the familiar striped appearance behind the trade name. The body is cylindrical rather than dorsoventrally flattened, with two pairs of walking legs on most trunk rings, as expected for a diplopod. Color intensity varies among individuals and after molts, so identity should not be assigned from band color alone. A profile-level identification should also consider the cylindrical spirobolidan form, locality or supplier history, adult size around several centimeters, and current taxonomy. Similar banded millipedes occur in commerce, and juveniles can be difficult to identify confidently without provenance or specialist examination.

Field Note

Bumblebee millipedes are striped Caribbean decomposers that have also become established in Florida. Their dark bodies and yellow bands make them conspicuous, but their ecological job is wonderfully ordinary: they spend much of their time inside leaf litter and decaying wood, helping break down plant material into smaller particles that soil organisms can continue processing.
