Real-World InspirationAphonopelma seemanni is a terrestrial New World tarantula characterized in the hobby by a dark brown to black ground color and conspicuous pale cream, tan, or gray longitudinal striping on the legs, particularly around the patellae and tibiae. Adults are robust, ground-dwelling spiders with a dense covering of setae and an abdomen equipped with urticating setae typical of many New World theraphosids. Adult diagonal leg span commonly reaches roughly five to six inches in captive descriptions. The trade names Costa Rican zebra and stripe-knee tarantula are useful but not definitive identification characters because color and striping vary with locality, molt stage, sex, and lighting. Current World Spider Catalog treatment recognizes A. seemanni from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica and incorporates historical synonymy.
