Some spiders hide. Habronattus apparently received the memo and decided to become tiny performance artists instead. Paradise Jumping Spiders are among the most visually theatrical salticids on Earth, famous for males that may carry extraordinary combinations of iridescent greens, electric blues, fiery reds, oranges, dramatic leg ornamentation, and intricate courtship displays performed for females only a few millimeters away. Florida’s own species include the Ocala Paradise Spider, Bandana Jumper, Habronattus alachua, H. decorus, H. viridipes, and an entire constellation of other miniature showstoppers. Females often wear subtler natural camouflage while males can look as though somebody handed evolution a UV flashlight and told it to improvise. These are primarily observation animals, but their nonstop visual communication, hunting behavior, rapid movements, and remarkable sexual dimorphism make them endlessly rewarding to watch. For Myco-Patrons who want one of the strangest combinations of spider, dancer, jewel, and tiny arena fighter nature has produced, Habronattus is difficult to beat.
